Maria Hatling

New in 2011 Stand 76

My name is Maria Hatling and I am an artist and designer from Norway currently living and working from my studio in South London.

A lot of my work is based on memories from growing up in Scandinavia. For me that part of the world represents clean, spaciousness and closeness to nature. It is very modern but at the same time as it is also very traditional. My work is the same. By rejecting many of the traditional print making techniques choosing to draw and create some of my artwork freehand directly on the computer I will argue that you still have to train your hand-eye coordination in a traditional way to develop a personal signature style that can be classed as art. My work created directly on the computer has often a more hand drawn human feel than my work created with traditional pen and paper. I see the computer only as another tool for artists to express themselves. The outcome of the work is for me still very personal. All my work explores the relationship between colour, shape, texture, space, technology and tradition.

Before launching my own line of limited edition prints and soft furnishing I worked as an in - house print and homeware designer for London brand Orla Kiely for six years. (2004-2010)
